Paul Chowles, a UK National Crime Agency (NCA) officer, faces multiple charges over allegations that he stole 50 Bitcoin
The accused is set to appear in court on April 25, 2025. Prosecutors claim he took the Bitcoin while working on a case targeting online organized crime. The Merseyside Police, which has been investigating the matter, allege that Chowles mishandled digital assets during the operation.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has listed 15 charges against him, covering theft and the handling of criminal property.

This includes 11 counts of “concealing, disguising, or converting criminal property”, three counts of “acquiring, using, or possessing criminal property”, and a single charge of theft.
The NCA, which handles cybercrime and financial offenses, has expanded its authority in recent years. Since 2024, it has had the power to seize and freeze cryptocurrency linked to criminal activity without requiring an arrest.
Malcolm McHaffie, Head of the CPS Special Crime Division, stated:
The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against this defendant are now active and that he has the right to a fair trial.
He also urged the public to avoid discussing the case online to prevent any interference.
