On Monday, NBCUniversal collaborated with Ready Player Me to bring the movie studio’s Classic Monsters lineup ‘back from the dead’ as NFTs.
The digital collection features world-famous monsters such as Dracula, Bride of Frankenstein, Creature from Black Lagoon, The Mummy and Frankenstein.
NBCU is teaming with VARIANT3D to sell phygital garments based on classic IPs. VARIANT3D creates digital twins of its real-world items based on digital twin technology, stitching near field communication (NFC) chips with each limited edition clothing item.
The new feature allows users to share a copy of their NFTs as a Proof of Attendance (POAP) with others to award points to physical product owners for monitoring on a leaderboard.
All transactions are conducted on the Polygon blockchain, one of the world’s most energy-efficient blockchains to date, with just 0.037 grammes of CO2 production for each transaction, or less than a single email.
Additionally, NBCU and VARIENT3D’s limited-edition clothes come with a minted NFT of a chosen character, collectable patches, an augmented reality (AR) try-on lens for Snapchat, and a wearable digital twin of their item for Metaverse platforms powered by Ready Player Me.
Universal Monsters fans can get the new digital items from NBCU’s official website.
Building an Efficient and Accessible NFT Campaign
NBCU is using MoonPay and its Polygon blockchain to distribute the collectables. MoonPay’s parent company, OpenSea, recently made traditional payment options available on the NFT marketplace, enabling its users to purchase, mint, and trade blockchain goods without requiring a crypto-wallet.

The integration enables NBCU to leverage HyperMint by OpenSea, which allows large brands, agencies, and enterprises to mint countless NFTs efficiently.
Also, the service allows firms to scale blockchain-based operations that initially took months to create. Now affiliated firms can launch an immersive product-filled campaign in a day. OpenSea also works with major media partners like Warner Music Group to establish Web3 infrastructures.
Greg Reed, the VP of Technology Partnerships for Universal Filmed Entertainment Group, said,
“Through Universal Pictures’ partnership with MoonPay and their HyperMint platform for NFTs, combined with this apparel offering through VARIANT3D, and virtual apparel with Ready Player Me and Snapchat, NBCUniversal is able to bring this digital fashion to the masses”
Also, NBCU project partners Opensea and VARIANT3D designed the campaign to create environmentally-conscious Web3 and phygital goods.
Garrett Gerson, the CEO and Founder of VARIANT3D, explained that his firm uses custom textiles, digital twins, and rapidly reduced sampling to produce environmentally conscious clothing.
